The question of commercial art has always been a subject that interested me. We live in a world where everything is sold and bought. Art has been commercial from the very start. Maybe the cave painters were still hunters, but I bet they got something from their peers. Respect? Food? Sexual favours? Who knows?
But it is clear that from the renaissance onwards art has been closely involved with money. Rich families competed and sponsored artists. Fine art and commercial art were one and the same.
But today some people separate commercial and fine art like Moses did the Red sea. I do not have anything the fine artists of today. But I do not like the attitude of some people who think that they are better and something more because they put something in a middle of a white room and call it art. Do not take me wrong sometimes I really enjoy a piece of minimalist modern art. But more likely I will admire well set type in a magazine advert.
In animation the difference is obvious. You can see the artistic, or abstract animation from miles away. To me the effect of let's say a piece of 3D digital animation and charcoal drawn abstract shape animation is similar. If it is well done I get a nice warm feeling (and no I do not wet myself).
To me both are art. Let us look at two completely different Oscar nominated animations.

One is clearly more artistic, while the other may classify as commercial.
