The question of realism in last weeks lecture immediatly made me think of Cannibal Holocaust. The movie by director Rugger Deodato, made in the late 70s/early 80s, was real enough in its special effects of gore and violence, to get the director arrested for murder. The charges were later dropped, when he contacted the crew and voided the contracts they signed, stating they won't appear in any media for a year.
People want to see realism. But only if it is incredible enough that we don't believe it.
If we really wanted to see reality there would only ever be news shows. And the ever so popular reality shows wouldn't have castings and directors. There i see the point of this lecture. The difference between reality and its mere representation a.k.a. realism.
